Alejandro Amenábar

Alejandro Fernando Amenábar Cantos (born 31 March 1972) is a Spanish film director. Amenábar was born in Santiago, Chile to a Spanish mother and Chilean father, but the family moved to Spain just one year after his birth. He studied cinema at Madrid's Universidad Complutense but eventually dropped out.

In addition to writing and directing his own films, Amenábar has maintained a notable career as a composer of film scores, including the Goya Awards-nominated score for José Luis Cuerda's La lengua de las mariposas.

Amenábar was awarded the Grand Prix of the Jury at the International Venice Film Festival in 2004 for Mar adentro ("The Sea Inside"), and in February 2005 the same film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

In February 2004, Amenábar came out to the Spanish gay magazine Shangay Express.

Amenábar shot in 2008 an epic film called Ágora which he wrote with Mateo Gil. The film is set in Roman Egypt and is based on the life of philosopher and mathematician Hypatia of Alexandria.

Faz estudos de Imagem, estreando-se na realização com La Cabeza (1991), filme premiado na Asociación Independiente de Cineastas Amateurs. Abre los ojos (1997) reúne junto da crítica e do público um consenso muito positivo. Depois de Los Otros (2001) protagonizado por Nicole Kidman, filma com Javier Bardem Mar Adentro (2004) filme galardoado com o Óscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro.

Director, guionista y compositor de música de cine español. Nació en Santiago de Chile y mientras estudiaba Imagen en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Información (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) obtuvo varios premios en festivales de vídeo. José Luis Cuerda, impresionado por su cortometraje Himenóptero, decidió producirle su primer largometraje, Tesis (1996). Esta película sobre snuff movies (rodajes de escenas reales de violencia) sorprende por la juventud de su autor y perfila ya su estilo: ajuste a los cánones del género comercial, altas dosis de suspense, dinamismo en la realización, quiebros argumentales que aseguran la sorpresa final, tensión y terror. Con este filme consiguió el Premio Goya a la mejor dirección novel y posteriormente realizó Abre los ojos (1997), thriller de ciencia ficción que pretende hacer una disquisición sobre la realidad, la apariencia y el valor de la belleza externa.
