José Luis Cuerda became a radio and television technician after leaving law school. In 1969 he joined Televisión Española, making reports and documentaries for the news services. Between 1985 and 1987 he was a professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Salamanca. After shooting several short films, in 1982 he directed his first feature film.

José Luis Cuerda se hizo técnico de radio y televisión tras abandonar sus estudios de Derecho. En 1969 se incorporó a Televisión Española, realizando reportajes y documentales para los servicios informativos. Entre 1985 y 1987 fue profesor en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Salamanca. Tras rodar varios cortometrajes, en 1982 dirige su primer largometraje.
