Discuss Kirk Douglas

I shall hopefully be watching a Kirk Douglas movie which I have not yet seen in tribute to him over the next day or two. Which of the following would you recommend? Also, will anyone else be watching a Kirk movie or two over the coming days?

  • Young Man with a Horn (1950)
  • The Story of Three Loves (1953)
  • Town Without Pity (1961)
  • Lonely are the Brave (1962)
  • There Was a Crooked Man... (1970)

Lonely are the Brave (1962) I saw it when I was 10 or 11 & thought it was the saddest movie I had ever seen!

I have never specifically sought out Kirk Douglas films, and it's been multiple years since I last watched one. I've seen at least seven or so of his movies throughout the years and remember being impressed by his performance in each one. Mr. Douglas is a star who I'm a definite appreciator of.

Having watched the trailer for 1957's Paths of Glory the other hour, that's currently striking me as one of his movies that I'd be very interested to watch, that I'm pretty certain I've never, to date, seen.

Paths of Glory is a brilliant film with a great performance by Kirk.

Have you seen Ace in the Hole? I think that’s probably his greatest performance, certainly from those I have seen. He was superb at playing cynical or downright spiteful characters.

Lust for Life is one I was impressed with and a different character from the usual.

rudely, I don't believe I've seen that one. I'll be sure to check it out at some point, since I trust your recommendation.

Kirk said about that film:

...I...played the self-serving bad guy....My co-star was Jan Sterling, playing the the victim's scheming wife. In one scene I am supposed to choke her. Before the cameras rolled, I told Jan to let me know if I was being too rough. When she turned blue and went limp, I released her. "Why didn’t you stop me?!" I demanded when she came to. "I couldn’t," she rasped, "because you were choking me."....

Yes, znex: Lust for Life is definitely a good one. When I think of Kirk Douglas films, the two specific ones that most readily come to my mind are that and Spartacus.

Incidentally, Kirk considered Lonely Are the Brave (1962) his favourite of his movies.
