Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016) was an American singer-songwriter, actor, multi-instrumentalist, philanthropist, dancer, filmmaker and record producer. He was a musical innovator who was known for his eclectic work, flamboyant stage presence, extravagant dress and makeup, and wide vocal range. His music integrates a wide variety of styles, including funk, rock, R&B, new wave, soul, psychedelia, and pop. He has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He won seven Grammy Awards, an American Music Award, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award for the film Purple Rain. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, his first year of eligibility. Rolling Stone ranked Prince at number 27 on its list of 100 Greatest Artists, "the most influential artists of the rock & roll era".

Prince was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and developed an interest in music as a young child. He signed a recording contract with Warner Bros. at the age of 18, and released his debut album For You in 1978. His 1979 album Prince went platinum, and his next three records—Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982)—continued his success, showcasing Prince's prominently sexual lyrics and blending of funk, dance, and rock music. In 1984, he began referring to his backup band as the Revolution and released Purple Rain, the soundtrack album to his eponymous 1984 film debut. It quickly became his most critically and commercially successful release, spending 24 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 and selling over 20 million units worldwide. After releasing the albums Around the World in a Day (1985) and Parade (1986), The Revolution disbanded, and Prince released the double album Sign o' the Times (1987) as a solo artist. He released three more solo albums before debuting the New Power Generation band in 1991.

In 1993, while in a contractual dispute with Warner Bros., he changed his stage name to an unpronounceable symbol also known as the "Love Symbol", and began releasing new albums at a faster pace to remove himself from contractual obligations. He released five records between 1994 and 1996 before signing with Arista Records in 1998. In 2000, he began referring to himself as "Prince" again. He released 16 albums after that, including the platinum-selling Musicology (2004). His final album, Hit n Run Phase Two, was first released on the Tidal streaming service on December 12, 2015. Prince died from an accidental fentanyl overdose at his Paisley Park recording studio and home in Chanhassen, Minnesota, on April 21, 2016, at the age of 57.

Il a exploré durant sa carrière une grande variété de styles musicaux, de la pop au funk en passant par le rock ou le RnB.

La carrière de Prince démarre en 1978 et sa discographie compte plus de trente album studio parus en un peu moins de quarante ans. Il a aussi composé des chansons et produit des albums pour d'autres artistes, parmi lesquels les Bangles, Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, Madonna, Sheila E., Mavis Staples ou The Time. Multi-instrumentiste – il pratique une vingtaine d'instruments, excellant notamment à la guitare, à la basse, au piano, à la batterie et aux claviers – Prince s'est forgé une aura de créateur ambitieux, éclectique, et une réputation scénique hors pair en affectionnant danser et les solos. Il est aussi connu pour l'emploi des références sexuellement explicites dans certaines de ses chansons, comme pour l'usage de costumes excentriques en concert.

Son plus gros succès commercial est l'album Purple Rain publié en 1984 (bande originale du film éponyme dans lequel il joue le rôle principal), vendu à vingt millions d'exemplaires, contenant, outre le morceau-titre, les tubes Let's Go Crazy et When Doves Cry. Il est également l'auteur de Sign o' the Times, de la bande originale du film Batman (1989) de Tim Burton, des tubes Little Red Corvette, Kiss, Cream ou encore Sexy MF. Le morceau phare de Sinéad O'Connor, Nothing Compares 2 U, est par ailleurs une composition de Prince, tout comme Manic Monday des Bangles.

En 1993, il abandonne son nom de scène au profit de l'imprononçable pictogramme «Love Symbol», afin de contester le contrat qui le lie à la maison de disques Warner Bros. Il en est partiellement libéré en 1996, puis totalement en 2000, et reprend alors son pseudonyme d'origine. Il signe un nouvel accord avec la firme en 2014, qui lui permet, en principe, de devenir propriétaire de ses enregistrements Warner (ce qui avait été l'un des motifs du conflit des années 1990). Il est par ailleurs l'un des premiers à expérimenter la diffusion de la musique par Internet avant de s'en distancier.

Sa célébrité s'étend principalement de 1982 à 1994, soit de l'album 1999 à la chanson The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. Prince connaît un regain de popularité à partir de 2004, année de son intronisation au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, et de la parution du recueil Musicology, écoulé à deux millions d'exemplaires aux États-Unis. Son interprétation, sous une pluie battante, du titre Purple Rain, à la mi-temps du Super Bowl XLI le 4 février 2007 à Miami, est généralement considérée comme un des plus grands moments de ces traditionnelles prestations musicales annuelles, données au centre de la pelouse devant des dizaines de milliers de spectateurs et des millions de téléspectateurs.

Er war ab 1978 im Musikgeschäft tätig. Vor allem in den 1980er Jahren beeinflusste er die internationale Musikszene, indem er unterschiedliche Musikgenres miteinander kombinierte. Die stilistische Bandbreite seiner Musik reichte von Contemporary R&B, Funk, Soul, Pop und Rock über Blues bis hin zum Jazz. Seine Liedtexte schrieb Prince selbst, zudem komponierte, arrangierte und produzierte er seine Songs. Außerdem spielte er Instrumente wie Gitarre, E-Bass, Klavier, Keyboard und Schlagzeug. Bei den meisten seiner Studioaufnahmen spielte er alle Instrumente selbst.

Den internationalen Durchbruch schaffte Prince im Jahr 1984 mit der Single und dem Album Purple Rain zum gleichnamigen Film, in dem er auch die Hauptrolle spielt. Zu Lebzeiten wurden weltweit mehr als 100 Millionen seiner Tonträger verkauft und er gewann sieben Grammy Awards, 1985 einen Oscar sowie 2007 einen Golden Globe Award. 2004 wurde er in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen.

In den 1990er Jahren verfocht Prince entschieden die Rechte an seinem geistigen Eigentum, was er unter anderem durch seinen Widerstand gegen Schallplattenfirmen zeigte. Aufgrund von Differenzen mit seiner damaligen Plattenfirma Warner Bros. Records legte er von 1993 bis 2000 seinen Künstlernamen ab. In dieser Zeit trug er statt eines aussprechbaren Namens ein Symbol als Pseudonym und wurde häufig als The Artist Formerly Known As Prince („Der früher als Prince bekannte Künstler“) oder kurz TAFKAP bezeichnet. Nach dem Vertragsende mit Warner nannte sich der Musiker ab Mai 2000 wieder Prince.

Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts grenzte er sich zunehmend von der Musikindustrie ab und wählte unkonventionelle Vertriebskanäle für seine Tonträger; einige seiner Alben waren zeitweise nur über das Internet oder als Zeitungsbeilage erhältlich.
