Claude-Michel Schönberg (born 6 July 1944, in Vannes) is a French record producer, actor, singer, songwriter, and musical theatre composer, best known for his collaborations with lyricist Alain Boublil. Major works include La Révolution Française (1973), Les Misérables (1980), Miss Saigon (1989), Martin Guerre (1996), The Pirate Queen (2006), and Marguerite (2008).

Schönberg began his career as a record producer and a singer. He wrote most of the music for the French musical and rock opera La Révolution Française, France's first rock opera, in 1973. He played the role of King Louis XVI in the show's production that year.

In 1974 he wrote the music and the lyrics of the song "Le Premier Pas", which became the number one hit in France that year, selling over one million copies. Le Premier Pas was produced by Franck Pourcel. That year he also wrote a French version of the ABBA song "Waterloo", which was recorded by the group.

Schönberg then made an album in which he sang his own compositions. In 1978 he dedicated his attention to musicals when he and Alain Boublil conceived the idea for a stage musical version of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables. The original production was staged at the Palais de Sports in Paris in 1980. In 1985 and 1987 respectively, the musical opened in London and on Broadway, to acclaim in each instance. The Broadway production was nominated for twelve Tony Awards in 1987 and won eight, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

In 1989, Schönberg and Boublil produced the London showing of the musical Miss Saigon, which starred Lea Salonga and Jonathan Pryce. In its transition to Broadway, the show broke advance-ticket sales, earning $24 million before its premiere on 11 April 1991. The show was nominated for ten Tony awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

In 1997 Schönberg and Boublil premiered a new musical, Martin Guerre, at the Prince Edward Theatre in London. The musical won the 1997 Olivier Award and went on to tour the UK and the United States.

In 2001, Schönberg composed his first ballet score, Wuthering Heights. This production was performed by the United Kingdom's Northern Ballet Theatre Company in September 2002.

Schönberg's next project with Boublil was The Pirate Queen, a musical about the 16th-century Irish pirate, chieftain and adventuress Grace O'Malley. The Pirate Queen completed its eight-week pre-Broadway tryout at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre on 26 November 2006, and underwent further development in preparation for Broadway at the Hilton Theater in March 2007. The Broadway opening date was 5 April 2007. Miss Saigon co-lyricist Richard Maltby Jr. worked with Boublil on revisions to the book and lyrics, and Graciela Daniele worked on the musical staging.

Following a critical savaging and poor ticket sales, The Pirate Queen closed on 17 June 2007 after 85 performances and 32 previews, resulting in a loss of almost $18 million, ranking it among the largest commercial flops in Broadway history. ...

Claude-Michel Schönberg, né le 6 juillet 1944 à Vannes (Morbihan), est un producteur, acteur, chanteur, compositeur français de chansons populaires et de comédies musicales.

Sa famille, d'origine hongroise, est apparentée au compositeur Arnold Schönberg.

Ancien élève du Collège Saint-François-Xavier de Vannes puis de l’École supérieure de commerce de Nantes, ce n'est que dans les années 1960 qu'il commença sa carrière en tant que pianiste chanteur dans le groupe Les Vénètes. Il est ensuite engagé par Pierre Bourgoin, directeur de Pathé Marconi, comme directeur artistique pour les groupes Variations, Triangle, Wallace Collection, Roche Martin et les artistes Régine, Dani, Franck Pourcel, Véronique Sanson, Gilbert Bécaud…

Il a coécrit avec Raymond Jeannot la musique de l'opéra rock La Révolution française, en 1973, et a également joué le rôle du roi Louis XVI sur scène cette année-là, au Palais des sports de Paris. En 1974, il a écrit la musique et les paroles de la chanson Le premier Pas, qui a été numéro 1 en France avec plus d'un million d'exemplaires vendus. Le premier Pas a été produit par Franck Pourcel. Cette chanson n'a pas été écrite pour sa future épouse Béatrice Schönberg, qu'il a rencontrée quatre ans plus tard; le mariage a eu lieu en 1979.

En 1977, il écrit la chanson La tête en feu pour Mireille Mathieu, sur l’album Sentimentalement vôtre, qui s'écoulera à plus de 200 000 exemplaires.

Schönberg a enregistré six albums, produits par Franck Pourcel, dans lesquels il chante ses propres chansons. À la fin des années 1970, il participe à la réalisation de plusieurs enregistrements de la Bande à Basile, dont le célèbre titre La Chenille. En 1978, Schönberg et Boublil trouvent l'idée des Misérables. Depuis 2009, Les Misérables est devenue la comédie musicale qui a enregistré le plus grand nombre de spectateurs dans le monde (125 millions à ce jour).

Dans les années 1980, il travaille avec la chanteuse québécoise Martine St-Clair pour qui il écrit et compose une série de succès, dont Il y a de l'amour dans l'air (1983, chanson interprétée en France par Bruna Giraldi), Je vis pour la vie, Duel d'amour et Une grande histoire d'amour (1984), L'amour est dans tes yeux, Dis-moi de revenir et Quand je tombe en amour (1986) et Folle de vous (1988).

Écrite avec Boublil, The Pirate Queen, l'histoire d'une pirate irlandaise du XVIe siècle, Grace O'Malley, a ensuite été créée à Chicago au Cadillac Palace Théâtre le 3 octobre 2006; cette comédie musicale a ensuite été jouée au Hilton Theater de Broadway à partir du 5 avril 2007.

Le dernier projet de Boublil et Schönberg est Marguerite, incluant de la musique de Michel Legrand et des paroles de Herbert Kretzmer. Inspirée par La Dame aux camélias d'Alexandre Dumas fils et située durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale dans le Paris occupé, cette comédie musicale raconte l'histoire de la maîtresse d'un officier allemand qui s'attire l'amour d'un pianiste deux fois plus jeune qu'elle. Marguerite a lieu le 6 mai 2008 au Royal Haymarket Théâtre à Londres.

Claude-Michel Schönberg est divorcé de la journaliste Béatrice Schönberg, ensemble, ils ont deux enfants.
