Seth Woodbury MacFarlane (born October 26, 1973) is an American animator, writer, comedian, producer, actor, singer, voice actor, and director best known for creating the animated sitcoms Family Guy, American Dad! and The Cleveland Show, for which he also voices many of the shows' various characters.

A native of Kent, Connecticut, MacFarlane is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, where he studied animation, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. He was an animator and writer for Hanna-Barbera for several television shows, including Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken and Dexter's Laboratory, before creating his own series for 20th Century Fox entitled Family Guy in 1999. MacFarlane would go on to co-create American Dad! in 2005, The Winner in 2007 and The Cleveland Show in 2009 for 20th Century Fox.

As an actor, he has made guest appearances on shows such as Gilmore Girls, The War at Home and FlashForward. MacFarlane's interest in science fiction and fantasy has led to cameo and guest appearances on Star Trek: Enterprise and voicing the character of Johann Kraus in Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy II: The Golden Army. In 2008, he created his own YouTube series entitled Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy. As a performer, MacFarlane has sung at several venues, including Carnegie and Royal Albert Hall.

MacFarlane has won several awards for his work on Family Guy, including two Primetime Emmy Awards, and an Annie Award. In 2009, he won the Webby Award for Film & Video Person of the Year. He has been a subject of criticism from television watchdog groups, such as the Parents Television Council, who regularly condemn Family Guy for its indecency. He occasionally speaks at universities and colleges throughout the United States, and is a supporter of gay rights.

On the February 10, 2011 episode of the TBS variety nighttime talk-show series Conan, MacFarlane announced he is directing his first feature-length film, Ted. The film stars Mark Wahlberg as an adult, who as a child, wished his teddy bear would come to life. MacFarlane will be the voice and motion capture for the bear.

Il y rencontre Adam West et Jack Sheldon qui seront de la partie lors de la production de Family Guy.

C'est en freelance qu'il collabore avec Disney sur la série Le Livre de la Jungle, souvenirs d'enfance (1996) ainsi que l'adaptation animée d'Ace Ventura pour la Warner. Cette période de sa carrière lui est très profitable car il y apprend les différents fonctionnements de production selon les studios où il travaille. Parallèlement, McFarlane a toujours "Life of Larry" en tête, qu'il a fait évoluer en "Larry et Steve". Ce court de 1996 est apprécié de la Fox qui offre au réalisateur une place sur la chaîne MadTV.

Cette dernière lui offre finalement 50 000 dollars pour réaliser un pilote de ce qui pourrait devenir Family Guy. Au bout de six mois de travail acharné et solitaire, il présente son épisode à la compagnie qui commande immédiatement une première saison. En 1998, McFarlane a 24 ans et il est déjà producteur exécutif et réalisateur de sa propre série animée. Il enregistre de plus plusieurs voix lui-même, celles de Brian, Stewie et Peter Griffin (entres autres), alors que son amie Mila Kunis interprète la voix de Meg et Seth Green celle de Chris. La série est arrêtée en 2002 mais finalement reprise en 2005 suite aux nombreuses réclamations des fans. Cependant, son humour débridé lui attache de multiples controverses et fait de McFarlane l'une des cibles favorites des associations et groupes conservateurs américains.

Le 11 septembre 2001, alors que le réalisateur devait prendre l'avion pour New York pour une conférence, il évite, suite à une erreur d'horaire, d'être du nombre des victimes des attentats terroristes de cette journée mondialement connue. En 2005, en collaboration avec Matt Weitzman et Mike Barker, il sort une nouvelle série animée à l'humour tout aussi décalé que la première, American Dad! dont le ton est encore plus politique et engagé. C'est Walter Murphy qui s'occupe encore une fois d'écrire le thème musical de la série. Musicien, chanteur et danseur à ses heures perdues, il présente la 85ème cérémonie des Oscars durant laquelle lui et la "chorale gay de Los Angeles" entonnent le morceau provocateur "We saw your boobs" qui couronne la réputation très critique du personnage. En 2014, Albert à l'ouest marque son retour à la comédie, sur fond de western cette fois-ci, et sans avoir nullement recours, pour la première fois, à l'animation, classique ou numérique, pour son film. Il y tient par ailleurs le rôle principal.

Ta krótkometrażowa animacja bardzo spodobała się ludziom, jednak w kolejce po usługi Setha nie ustawiły się wielkie amerykańskie korporacje. Dopiero pół roku później telewizja FOX zgłosiła się do MacFarlane'a i zaoferowała mu 50 tys. dolarów za stworzenie pilotowego odcinka serialu, który jest nam znany jako "Family Guy".
