Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas born October 13, 1980 is an American recording artist, record producer and actress who rose to fame in the early 2000s. Ashanti is most famous for her eponymous debut album, which featured the hit song "Foolish", and sold over 503,000 copies in its first week of release throughout the U.S. in April 2002. The album set a Soundscan record as the biggest opening week sales for a new female artist, outselling debuts by Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill. In the same week, she became the first female performer to simultaneously hold the top two places on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with "Foolish", and "What's Luv?" (with Fat Joe). Ashanti broke records again by having three top ten songs, "Foolish," "What's Luv?" and "Always on Time", on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the same week, being the first woman to accomplish this feat and being second only to the Beatles. In 2003, the self-titled debut album won Ashanti her first Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B album. As of 2008, she has sold more than 27 million albums worldwide. Ashanti ended the decade (2000–09) as the third top new R&B artist behind Alicia Keys and Beyonce Knowles. She also ended the decade at number 38 on the Top Artist of the Decade list. As of 2010, Ashanti is listed in the 20 Best Selling Music Singles Since 1990 in History. She ranked #17, with Foolish selling more than 7.4 million copies in the U.S.

Ashanti sang background vocals for Jennifer Lopez on "I'm Real (Murder Remix)" and wrote and sang background on the song "Ain't It Funny (Murder Remix)" sung by Jennifer Lopez, both reaching number one on Billboard Hot 100 , which was also in the top 10 charts at the same time as "Foolish", "Always on Time" (with Ja Rule), and "What's Luv" (with Fat Joe). Later that year, she was acclaimed as the "Princess Of Hip-Hop & R&B" by her label and capped off her successful debut by winning eight Billboard awards and two American Music Awards. Within seven years of Ashanti's career, she has scored 16 top 40 hits on the Hot 100. Ashanti has endorsed numerous products including Gap, Herbal Essences and Mudd Jeans.

Ashanti cites Janet Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Tupac Shakur, Aaliyah, Tamia, Mary J. Blige, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Yolanda Adams, Toni Braxton, Luther Vandross, The Beatles, The Clark Sisters, Smokey Robinson, Donna Summer, and Blue Magic as her musical influences. Ashanti, de son vrai nom Ashanti Shequoiya « Shani Bani » Douglas, née le 13 octobre 1980 à Glen Cove (États-Unis), est une chanteuse de R'n'B, également actrice.

La carrière de Ashanti S. Douglas débute en 1994, au cours d'un concours de jeunes talents. Elle rencontre le producteur Irv Gotti qui appartient au label Murder Inc. Records. Ashanti enregistre un duo avec le rappeur Big Punisher. Elle participe également à la bande originale de Fast and Furious en 2001.

À l'occasion des duos avec Ja Rule Always on time et avec Fat Joe What's Luv qui auront un véritable succès.

Ashanti va ainsi conquérir la place R'n'B et sortir son premier opus éponyme, Ashanti, en 2002, d'où sont extraits les tubes Foolish, Happy et Baby. L'album sera vendu à 5 millions d'exemplaires. Ashanti devient aussi la seule chanteuse de l'histoire à avoir inscrit trois chansons en même temps dans le top dix américain (Always on Time, What's Luv et Foolish).

En 2002, elle apparaît dans le clip Ain't It Funny (Murder Remix) de Jennifer Lopez en featuring avec Ja Rule et Caddillac Tah.

En 2003, elle enregistre un duo avec le rappeur Ja Rule Mesmerize .

Elle sort son deuxième album Chapter II qui s'inscrit dans la continuité de son premier album.

Fin 2004 sort son troisième album Concrete Rose.

Ashanti commence aussi une carrière de cinéma avec une apparition dans Coup de foudre à Bollywood et dans un petit rôle dans Coach Carter. En 2005, elle tourne deux films John Tucker doit mourir avec Jesse Metcalfe et Le Magicien d'Oz des Muppets une version du Magicien d'Oz avec les Muppets.

En 2006, Ashanti enregistre son cinquième album "The Declaration " où travailleront entre autres Nelly, Sean Paul, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre et P.Diddy.

Au vu de ce semi-échec commercial, Ashanti rompt son contrat à l'amiable avec Murder INC pour cause des ventes décevantes et de divergences interne.

En 2007, elle est à l'affiche du film Resident Evil: Extinction, troisième volet de la saga Resident Evil, dans le rôle de Nurse Betty.

En 2010, elle participe à l'émission de télé réalité Les Maçons du cœur.

Ashanti continue désormais sa carrière de manière indépendante sous son propre Label Written Entertainment.

Le deuxième single Never Should Have lui aussi n'aura pas le succès attendu. Viennent alors les questions au sujet des capacités d'Ashanti de reconquérir son public après 7 ans d'absence et en tant qu'artiste indépendante.

En janvier 2014 sort le 3e single de l'album I got it en duo avec le Rappeur Rick Ross. Enfin le 4 mars 2014 sort Braveheart.

Malgré des débuts difficiles d'exploitation des singles " The Woman You love et " Never Should Have", et le fait de repousser maintes fois la sortie de son album c'est avec I got it qu'elle retrouve le chemin du succès et des charts, du coup boostant les ventes de son album Braveheart, qui sera bien classé en Amérique et au Royaume-Uni.

Braveheart à sa sortie sera classé numéro 1 au top des albums indépendants aux États-Unis.

I got it lui permet de reconquérir ses fans français.

Ashanti débute sa tournée pour la promotion de Braveheart à travers les États-Unis.

Elle est à l'affiche du téléfilm Mutant World de Syfy.
