Henry Cavill to Star in ‘Voltron’ for Amazon MGM (Exclusive)
Rawson Marshall Thurber, the filmmaker behind the Netflix hit 'Red Notice,' is directing the live-action adaptation, which will shoot this fall in Australia.
Henry Cavill, the Superman actor and star of The Witcher, has come aboard to topline in the live-action feature based on the mecha anime that Rawson Marshall Thurber is directing.
The actor joins Daniel Quinn-Toye, the newcomer who impressed the studio and director with his West End work opposite Tom Holland, in leading the roll call.
Voltron is based on the Japanese sci-fi series Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV. World Events edited and dubbed the series as a syndicated show, naming it Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which ran in the mid-1980s. The premise centered on five young pilots in a battalion named the Robot Lions, which are vehicles that join together to form a mega-robot known as Voltron.
The plot details for the new version is unclear. Thurber wrote the script with Ellen Shanman.
Producing are Todd Lieberman via Hidden Pictures, World Events Productions’ Bob Koplar, Thurber and Hobie Films’ David Hoberman.
I have no idea what Voltron is. After seeing this vid, it still doesn't ring a bell. But the robot looks cool.

A giant robot. Of course geeks are over the moon and, as always, I'm clueless. HC better look like HC in this film.

It looks like Pacific Rim. The first one was good. The second one not so much.

Cool! I hope they do this right. Transformers' CGI looks very good. But modern CGI can suck like hell too.

Amazon MGM Studios
Laura Gordon and Tim Griffin have also joined the cast of Voltron for Amazon MGM Studios.
TBH, I'm not sure how I feel about this diverse and inclusive cast. It feels like checking boxes. The American animated TV series was based on a Japanese anime TV series. The adaptation to film is very diverse and yet there isn't any Japanese in it.

Screen Queensland has today announced that Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action film Voltron has commenced filming on the Gold Coast, Australia.
Minister for the Arts, John-Paul Langbroek said that “securing this major production to the state will ensure the continued growth of our local screen industry and further bolster the Gold Coast’s international reputation as a global screen production destination.
“I look forward to Amazon MGM’s production of Voltron commencing filming and its welcome injection of more than $100 million to Queensland’s economy including hundreds of screen industry jobs and a significant boost for local businesses.
“The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring these significant benefits are realised across the state, leveraging local talent, extraordinary locations and state-of-the-art facilities.”
Jacqui Feeney, Screen Queensland CEO said that Voltron is the latest in a steady pipeline of Amazon MGM Studios productions to film in the sunshine state, following on from The Bluff and Balls Up earlier in the year.
“We are delighted that our Production Attraction Strategy, combined with the Australian Government’s 30 per cent Location Offset, has secured another Amazon MGM project for Queensland––a film production of significant scale creating impressive screen worlds––which will again showcase the skills of our talented local crew, cast and stunt workers to a global audience.
“Voltron will employ approximately 825 screen practitioners at Village Roadshow Studios and provide invaluable on-set training opportunities to emerging crew on this high-calibre production.”

They were talking about doing a live action Voltron since the Transformers movies took off. They spent years fighting over who owned the rights. By the time they figured it out, they decided to do a cartoon on Netflix, instead.
I hope they do it justice. This was my favorite cartoon, in the 80s. Cavill is a good addition but I feel he's too old to play Keith. I figured he'd play Prince Lotor.

December is a weird month to start shooting. In two or three weeks, the holidays start.

I thought shooting outside the US had to do with the scenery. It looks like it's all about the tax cuts.
