Joseph Cheshire Cotten (Petersburg, Virgínia, 15 de maig de 1905 - Westwood, Califòrnia, 6 de febrer de 1994) fou un actor estatunidenc arribat al cinema de la mà de Orson Welles, col·laborant en pel·lícules com Ciutadà Kane o El tercer home, i conegut pel gran públic per algunes de les seves grans interpretacions a pel·lícules d'Alfred Hitchcock.

Joseph Cheshire Cotten (May 15, 1905 – February 6, 1994) was an American actor of stage and film. Cotten achieved prominence on Broadway, starring in the original productions of The Philadelphia Story and Sabrina Fair. He is associated with Orson Welles, leading to appearances in Citizen Kane (1941), The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), Journey into Fear (1943), for which Cotten was also credited with the screenplay, and The Third Man (1949). He was a star in his own right with films such as Shadow of a Doubt (1943), Love Letters (1945), Portrait of Jennie (1948), and The Third Man (1949).

Atuou no filme Cidadão Kane, de 1941, dirigido por Orson Welles, no qual interpretou o jornalista e crítico Jedediah Leland, de forma convincente, não ganhando o Oscar no ano de 1941 mas consagrando-o internacionalmente. Manteve-se ligado a Welles, atuando em filmes que tinham a participação do gênio cinematográfico: Jornada para o Medo e o clássico O Terceiro Homem. Perdeu a voz na década de 80 devido a um derrame cerebral e morreu aos 88 anos em consequência de uma pneumonia.
