Ingrid Lilian Thulin (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈɪŋːrɪd tɵˈliːn]; 27 January 1926 – 7 January 2004) was a Swedish film actress.

Thulin was born in Sollefteå, Ångermanland, northern Sweden, the daughter of Nanna (née Larsson) and Adam Thulin, a fisherman. She took ballet lessons as a girl and was accepted by The Royal Dramatic Theatre ("Dramaten") in Stockholm 1948.

For many years she worked regularly with Ingmar Bergman; among other films, Thulin appeared in Bergman's Wild Strawberries (1957), The Magician (1958, where she acted dressed as a boy), in Winter Light (1962), as well as The Silence (1963) and Cries and Whispers (1972).

She shared the Best Actress award at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival and received a Guldbagge Award for Best Actress in 1964, the first year the award was given out, for her performance in The Silence. Winner of the David di Donatello Awards 1974, Thulin was also been nominated for the BAFTA Award the same year. In 1980, she was the head of the jury at the 30th Berlin International Film Festival.

She was married to Harry Schein, the founder of the Swedish Film Institute, for more than 30 years until 1989, although they had lived separately for many years before the divorce. She bought an apartment in Paris, France in the early 1960s and some years later a beach house in San Felice Circeo. In 1970 she became a resident of Sacrofano, Italy, where she lived for 34 years. She returned to Sweden for medical treatment and later died from cancer in Stockholm, Sweden, 20 days shy of her 78th birthday.

Elle était, avec Greta Garbo et Ingrid Bergman, la plus connue des actrices suédoises.

Elle incarna l’archétype de la beauté nordique, froide et mystérieuse. Une des égéries du cinéaste Ingmar Bergman, elle a également travaillé sous la direction de Luchino Visconti, Vincente Minnelli et d'Alain Resnais.

Après une formation de danseuse classique, Ingrid Thulin fait ses débuts de comédienne au Théâtre dramatique royal de Stockholm. Dès les années 1940, elle a de petits rôles de figuration dans quelques longs métrages du cinéma nordique.

En 1954, le réalisateur suédois Ingmar Bergman la découvre au théâtre municipal de Malmö, danse La guerre de Troie n’aura pas lieu, et décide de la «prendre sous son aile». Cette rencontre va être le tremplin de sa carrière. Ingrid Thulin enchaîne les films du réalisateur: Les Fraises sauvages en 1957; Au seuil de la vie, en 1958, en compagnie de Bibi Andersson et d'Eva Dahlbeck, avec qui elle partage le prix d’interprétation féminine à Cannes. Elle va tourner en tout neuf films avec Bergman.

Au cours de sa carrière, elle joue toute une série de rôles variés, souvent difficiles et émouvants, comme la compagne d’un charlatan dans Le Visage (1958), une institutrice athée amoureuse d’un pasteur doutant de Dieu dans Les Communiants (1963), une malade alcoolique s’adonnant aux plaisirs solitaires dans Le Silence (1963), l’une des trois sœurs de Cris et chuchotements (1973).

À partir des années 1960, Ingrid Thulin participe aussi à des productions internationales comme Les Quatre Cavaliers de l'Apocalypse de Vincente Minnelli, La guerre est finie d’Alain Resnais et Les Damnés de Luchino Visconti.

La Maison du sourire (La casa del Sorriso), de Marco Ferreri, en 1991, marque la fin de sa carrière d’actrice.

Elle a réalisé aussi quelques films et participé à quelques pièces de théâtre à Broadway (New York).

Résidant à Rome à partir de 1964, elle revient dans son pays natal en janvier 2003 pour y faire traiter son cancer, mais elle y meurt l’année suivante.

Ingrid Thulin s’est mariée deux fois: avec l’acteur suédois Claes Sylwander, de 1952 à 1955; avec Harry Schein, cofondateur de l’Institut du film suédois, de 1959 à 1989.

Em 1974, foi vencedora do Donatello Awards e indicada ao BAFTA. Foi casada com Harry Schein — fundador do Instituto de Cinema Sueco — por mais de 30 anos, até se divorciarem, em 1989.

Durante años trabajó con el director sueco Ingmar Bergman, con quien desarrolló su estilo personal actuando con intensidad neurótica en largometrajes como El silencio (1963) y Gritos y susurros (1972), lo que la convertiría en la tercera actriz sueca de fama internacional (tras Greta Garbo e Ingrid Bergman).

Durante sus últimos años vivió en Roma, pero volvería a Suecia para recibir tratamiento médico. Murió de cáncer en Estocolmo en el 2004, poco antes de su 78º cumpleaños.
