Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (born Carla Gilberta Bruni Tedeschi; 23 December 1967) is an Italian-French singer and fashion model. In 2008, she married Nicolas Sarkozy, then president of France.

Bruni was born in Italy and moved to France at the age of seven. She was a model from 1987 to 1997 before taking up a career in music. She wrote several songs for Julien Clerc that were featured on his 2000 album, Si j'étais elle. Bruni released her first album, Quelqu'un m'a dit, in 2003, which eventually spent 34 weeks in the top 10 of the French Albums Chart. Bruni won the Victoire Award for Female Artist of the Year at the 2004 Victoires de la Musique. The same year, Bruni released her second album, No Promises, then the following year, she released her third album, Comme si de rien n'était. In 2013, Bruni released her fourth album, Little French Songs. In 2017, Bruni released her fifth album, French Touch. She has sold 5 million albums during her career.

In 2009, she created the Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Foundation for philanthropic efforts.

Bruni was born in Turin, Italy. She is legally the daughter of Italian concert pianist Marisa Borini and industrialist and classical composer Alberto Bruni Tedeschi. In 2008, however, Bruni told Vanity Fair that her biological father is Maurizio Remmert, a classical guitarist who comes from a wealthy family. When Remmert met Marisa Borini at a concert in Turin, he was a 19-year-old classical guitarist, and their affair lasted six years. Her sister is actress and movie director Valeria Bruni Tedeschi. She had a brother, Virginio Bruni Tedeschi (1959 – 4 July 2006), who died from complications of HIV/AIDS. Her (legal) paternal grandparents and her maternal grandfather were Italian, while the last quarter of her ancestry is French. She is second cousin of Alessandra Martines.

Bruni is heiress to the fortune created by the Italian tire manufacturing company CEAT, founded in the 1920s by her legal grandfather, Virginio Bruni Tedeschi. The company was sold in the 1970s to Pirelli (the brand continues in its former subsidiary in India, founded in 1958). The family moved to France in 1975, purportedly to escape the threat of kidnapping by the Red Brigades, a Communist terrorist group active in Italy in the 1970s and 1980s. Mannequin puis auteure-compositrice-interprète, elle est connue sous les noms de Carla Bruni, qu'elle continue à utiliser dans sa carrière artistique, et de Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, comme nom d'usage depuis son mariage en 2008 avec le président de la République française d’alors, Nicolas Sarkozy.

Installée en France depuis l'âge de 7 ans, elle mène une carrière de mannequin de 1987 à 1997, puis se reconvertit dans la musique. Elle écrit plusieurs titres sur l'album Si j'étais elle de Julien Clerc en 2000, puis sort son premier album, Quelqu'un m'a dit, en 2002. Cependant, le 9 janvier 2008, Maurizio Remmert, homme d'affaires installé depuis 30 ans à São Paulo au Brésil, révèle être le père biologique de Carla Bruni. Maurizio Remmert et Marisa Borini se sont rencontrés à Turin et ont eu une relation amoureuse durable dont est née Carla Bruni. Maurizio Remmert déclare que la filiation était connue d'Alberto Bruni Tedeschi depuis de nombreuses années, et qu'il a toujours traité Carla Bruni comme sa fille. Peu de temps avant la mort de son père en 1996, Carla Bruni a appris de sa mère l'existence de son père biologique.

Sa demi-sœur aînée est l'actrice, scénariste et réalisatrice Valeria Bruni Tedeschi et son frère aîné, Virginio, marin et photographe, est décédé à Paris le 4 juillet 2006 des suites du sida. Son père biologique a également une fille: Consuelo Remmert.

En 1975, sa famille s'installe en France par peur des enlèvements par les Brigades rouges italiennes.

Jeune, elle apprend le piano puis la guitare. Elle est élève au lycée Janson-de-Sailly et à l'École bilingue Jeannine-Manuel et est reçue au baccalauréat.

Elle baigne dans la musique depuis l'enfance et a hérité de sa famille un goût pour cet art. Passionnée de littérature et d'écriture, elle compose des chansons, en griffonnant ses textes entre deux activités.

Elle poursuit ses études dans des internats privés suisses et français, puis commence des études d'architecture à Paris, dont elle ne réalise qu'un semestre (université Paris-1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, campus de Tolbiac).

À l'âge de dix-neuf ans, elle arrête ses études d'architecture et devient mannequin pour l'agence parisienne City Models. ...

Die gebürtige Italienerin nahm 2008 die französische Staatsbürgerschaft an. Seit dem 2. Februar 2008 ist sie mit dem damaligen französischen Staatspräsidenten Nicolas Sarkozy verheiratet.

Bekannt wurde Bruni zunächst als eines der bestbezahlten Models der 1990er Jahre. Nach dem Ende ihrer Modelkarriere stieg sie ins Musikgeschäft ein und veröffentlichte 2002 das Album Quelqu’un m’a dit, das insbesondere in Frankreich und der Schweiz großen Erfolg hatte. Charakteristisch ist ihre sehr leise, etwas rauchig und teilweise auch brüchig klingende Stimme.

Carla Bruni Tedeschi wurde als Tochter der Schauspielerin und Konzertpianistin Marisa Borini und des italienischen Großindustriellen Alberto Bruni Tedeschi geboren. In einem Interview mit Vanity Fair räumte sie jedoch ein, dass ihr leiblicher Vater der damals 19-jährige Sohn des Liebhabers ihrer Mutter (Giorgio Remmert) und heutige brasilianische Unternehmer Maurizio Remmert sei. Ab dem fünften Lebensjahr wuchs sie in Frankreich auf, wohin ihre Familie (offiziell aus Angst vor der Untergrundorganisation Rote Brigaden) geflohen war. Als eigentlicher Grund gelten die damaligen Schwierigkeiten im familieneigenen Unternehmen (des Reifenherstellers CEAT), das später an den Pirelli-Konzern verkauft wurde. Später besuchte sie das Mädchenpensionat Château Mont-Choisi in Lausanne (Schweiz). Ihr Bruder war der Fotograf Virginio Bruni Tedeschi (1960–2006), der an AIDS starb. Ihre Schwester ist die Schauspielerin Valeria Bruni Tedeschi (* 1964).
