It is hard to find actors images with correct aspect ratio as required by TMDB

Thus it would then require more work with the photo editing software to correct aspect ratio and even then the images would look distorted e.g Long and thin pictures. so many ppl would just give up on adding actors images..

I suggest the aspect ratio requirement should be removed to make it easier to add actors images..

If you can't / won't do this, then you should add some cropping software/coding on the server end, so ppl can just crop the images within the browser.

Since adding the aspect ratio requirement the quality of profile images has improved a lot. So while it does alienate some users I think overall it has been a good step to take.

Users trying to fix images without knowing what they are doing is something that can't be avoided. When found out I will always contact such users.

As always, the image rules is a good starting point for any user not sure about how to contribute images here: https://www.themoviedb.org/documentation/editing/images

That's only is you simply resize the picture from... idk 1500x1500 to 1000x1500. Instead of >>cropping<< it. https://digitalphotographyformoms.com/cropping-vs-resizing-in-post-processing/

I think this argument is flawed. It does not improve the quality of profile images, since most ppl who add images are just googling and getting the same images.

The only thing this rule does, is force ppl to waste time cropping / resizing each image they upload. The image is still the same resolution.

In fact I think this makes it worst, cos ppl need to resize images which produce long thin distorted images since not all actors have large resolution photos that can be cropped.

And the image ppl might find could be below resolution required, so only option is to resize.

Or people end up cropping off a portion of the head etc..

Or increase in pixelation due to resize.

Users trying to fix images without knowing what they are doing is something that can't be avoided. When found out I will always contact such users. How are you gonna find out? It's a nice pipe dream, but in reality there are hundreds / thousands of images uploaded every day. Are you gonna check each one?

I also argue that actors images profiles are less important for quality than posters, fan art etc so people are not going to care.

Also there is no standard photo size for actors profile, whereas with posters, fan art, there is standard sizes created / released which makes it more easier to find and upload.

The only thing this rule does is -force ppl to waste more time to crop/resize each actors photos, so people will just give up and not add any actors photos following that ppl will just stop adding actors info to the movie, cos there is no point if you need to waste more time to add photos (that conform to the Aspect ratio)

That's why your actors info for many movies is poor and incomplete.

-the only reason this site has any content, is because ppl are willing to spend their personal precious time to add data to this site, When you force something that require ppl to waste more time than necessary (ie cropping/resizing) then ppl will just won't bother adding those data and the movie will just be incomplete.

You need to look at this from a contributors POV, we are not gonna waste our time cropping / resizing each actors photos. It is just a waste of time!!

IF you must enforce this rule, then at least make it is easier for ppl to crop within the browser window, so ppl can move a selection window around the uploaded image, so that it would fit within that selection and follow the resolution rule.

This is implemented on many other websites that allow you crop a profile pic.

Surely it can't be too hard to implement on this site.

That's only is you simply resize the picture from... idk 1500x1500 to 1000x1500. Instead of >>cropping<< it

Yes, but since actors photos are not in standard resolutions, unlike posters or fanart ppl will just google for a photo, and if the image is not large enough to crop

then the only option is RESIZE which would then produce a distorted image or pixelated image.

OR

ppl will end up cropping off a portion of the head etc..

Bad images are reported. Major contributors browse hundreds of profile images daily. There are not hundreds of thousands of profile images added every day and the vast majority of the contributors are well aware of how to use their respective image programs.

That's why your actors info for many movies is poor and incomplete.

This is a different issue not related to what you propose at all.

so ppl can move a selection window around the uploaded image, so that it would fit within that selection and follow the resolution rule.

So cropping in the browser window would suddenly produce wondrous results? Most of your other writing claim that this isn't possible with actor's images...

Then you leave that area to those that care about it. Those that want to dump bad images here just because it's easy are probably not really the contributors we want. Don't get me wrong, almost all contributions are welcome, but bad contributions only mean more work for other users and moderators cleaning up the mess.

So, to sum up, you want us to allow bad images since restricting bad images is leading to more bad images being added? I have not yet seen this and it's been years since this restriction was added. In fact, most of the really bad profile images I come across were added when we didn't have restrictions. If you are aware of newly added profile images that support your theory, feel free to report them.

No i am not saying that..

It is just an alternative solution, if you don't want to removed the aspect ratio rule.

I am just saying that it would allow ppl to at least get a Aspect ratio that is acceptable and much more easier to do this,

Instead of the current method, where ppl click upload image, then get an error message that ratio is not accepted.. then ppl would have to go load their photo editing software etc..

I only suggested a possible solution if the rule will not be removed.

And I have said some type of images (mainly smaller resolution files) , but i didn't say all images can't be re cropped.

The crop selection window within the uploaded image would make it more easier for ppl to upload images that meet your rules..

There are many other sites that do this when they have ratio requirement like profile pics.

It can't be that hard to implement on this site and would improve the site and make it easier for contributors.

Just keep an open mind about adding this feature to this site.

I'm sure that idea will be taken into consideration by the admin. We moderators can't decide about what features are added or not.

Still, I would say that almost all of our frequent image contributors (including myself) use some kind of image program before adding a poster, a backdrop or a profile image to this site. Even with such a feature I would prefer to use my own program.

Hi. Sorry to bump the thread, but there were a number of these threads to choose from, so I chose this. Sitting here, trying to get past that annoying ratio. I currently don't have any editing software other than a very old ACDSee with ACDSee Enhance (Circa year 2000), and that allows me to resize images. However, the current image is smaller than what you claim it should be. Tried setting the ratio there, but the image I got made the guy look like a obese hobbit, so the image was too narrow. Tried open it in MSPaint, resize it there to the exact size as the current one, and still got an error of wrong ratio

Actor page: https://www.themoviedb.org/person/1657172-jack-ryan

Image I wanted to replace with: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMjA5MDU5MzI1Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwMTQ3MDky._V1_UY1200_CR179,0,630,1200_AL_.jpg <- "original" image. Only one I could find for that matter, and it sure looks like someone else than Chris Pine's Jack Ryan.

Would be awesome with a script that allows you to resize and crop these profile pictures instead of having to fight with this issue. Tried a couple of months ago with another profile, but encountered the same problem then, so I gave up. You could perhaps implement a system like that of Wikipedia, or at least how it was back in the day (haven't been there for ages now trying to change anything) where all changes to any page was backed up and an email sent to all the authors so that any faults or mischief could be restored - Might be incite conflict in some cases perhaps, but "easy" enough to have a lock-function (for system admins) to settle a dispute. Just a thought...

Current pic is better in my opinion, also that picture on amazon you link is "edited" too.
(oh wait you mean that the pic is wrong to begin with. you didn't mention that clearly hahaha)

This is the original:
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMjA5MDU5MzI1Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwMTQ3MDky.jpg

When cropping that, it doesn't meet the minimum size requirements

EDIT oh wait never mind, minimum size is 300x450 not 500x750. I'll go ahead and crop it and upload it. (I use photoshop)
If you don't have fancy image editing programs, that's alright, you can just use web based https://pixlr.com/x/

how to do it, go to the crop tool (third one from the top) and use these settings (the import part is the stuff after selecting use aspect ratio)
https://pasteboard.co/JIXYth2.png

Also, I went ahead and reported the profile to delete the pic...

Ok. Thanks for that. I've bookmarked the site, and hopefully I'll remember to use it next time.

It will be an interesting duel. :-)
