Why is Netflix not listed as an option for Production Company/Studio? Can someone please officially add it with the logo? They are no longer just a rights buyer. They own studio facilities that produce films start to finish. If HBO and HBO Documentary Films are Production Companies then so is Netflix. Thanks.

Company pages have to be linked to an existing entry. If you want a Netflix production company page, add it to a movie or TV series actually produced by Netflix.

Okay. Thank you. I added to Marriage Story earlier this morning before I added this thread topic, but then I deleted before I saved because mods have been cracking down on more data entry, so I wanted to make sure it was done officially and was very surprised it had not been added before so assumed it was nixed for some reason.

I have just added it officially to Marriage Story. I am wildly surprised also that with the many mods and billions of edits to this website that one human has not added Netflix as a production company previously to a film, as the auto drop down asked me if I was sure that I wanted to add "Netflix" as a production company. So I made the assumption that someone else had added it before but a mod dropped it due to Netflix previously being a buyer and not a producer as in recent years. HBO has the HBO logo added next to it when selecting that Production Company option, so I also assumed that one of the mods adds the high res images to the production companies. The Irishman and Dolemite Is My Name are both Netflix exclusive productions for example, produced by and for Netflix. However those films production company editing options are locked. So now that it is listed as a production company, how long until the Logo is added? And how will users complete the information on locked films? Thanks, Adam

Hi, when researching this is in great detail earlier this year I could not find a case where Netflix was the actual production company for a movie or a TV-series. They were always more of a Network / Distributor / Presenter / Financier etc. So, maybe things have changed now?

I took a look at Marriage story. In the movie it is presented - as has been the case in all cases in the past - as "a Netflix Presentation" of a "Heyday Films Production". There is no mention of a Netflix Production, even though it is clear in this and many, many cases that they do finance the productions. However, there are no Netflix producer credits for Marriage Story, which usually means they are not directly involved with producing the movie in detail. They give all that freedom to the producer/director which is why a movie like The Irishman could only be made there.

In conclusion: yes, Netflix is also a movie/TV studio now, but not a traditional production company from what I could find. Based on that I decided to delete Netflix from Marriage Story and again delete Netflix as a production company. Interestingly, due to our rules about production countries being the location of the production company (not the location of where the movie was shot), the movie is now listed as a UK movie. nerd

Right. I figured as much. What about El Camino that was filmed at Netflix's ABQ Studios? http://abqstudios.com/recent-productions/ ... https://variety.com/2018/digital/news/netflix-albuquerque-studios-deal-terms-30-million-1202981274/

If I remember correctly it was still a "presents" credit only for Netflix on that one too, with three other companies actually credited with producing the movie. I don't think the studio space should factor in. ABQ Studios looks to be a popular space for almost all big studios based on the movies listed via your link. (Edit: I noticed you added the second link, but I guess it still doesn't change the overall situation.)

Right. Those films were made there before Netflix purchased in 2018. It is solely a Netflix facility now. https://variety.com/2018/digital/news/netflix-albuquerque-studios-deal-terms-30-million-1202981274/ Of course they are known for allowing limitless creative control, but it seems like silly semantics and strategic (yet arbitrary) labeling on their end to keep up appearances as the lenient parent and all the database sites, wikipedia included are playing along, when obviously they produced these movies and had some say in when, where, and how the film is produced, not just released.

when obviously they produced these movies and had some say in when, where, and how the film is produced, not just released.

Feel free to present evidence for that. Which credited person for Marriage Story is the Netflix producer? And why are they not listed as a production company in the movie?

The only issue I see is that we don't add a company credit for Presenter / Financier (. Yes, it is very obvious that Marriage Story is a Netflix movie, but as of now I think it's just as clear that they are not a traditional production company with a set staff of producers.

From our rules:

The "Production Companies" field should only be used for the production companies. No distributors.

Only proper production companies. No "Funded by" credits (e.g. Canadian provincial tax credit).

Just to use a notable comparison: check out credits for long-time (now retired I think) president of HBO Documentary Films, Sheila Nevins. Even with many credits missing here, I think you notice the pattern. Such credits have (almost) never appeared for Netflix executives, even though there can be some overlap since many Netflix executives have a background in other film or TV studios.

(Note: I will be out for a few hours now, but will check back in here later tonight.)

Thanks for the reply and discussion. I'll look into this issue and get back here in the coming weeks.
