The Movie Database Support

Hello,

I made a React-native mobile app with the TMDB logo and named it TMDB - Movie, TV, and People DB. Google did accept my app without any issue but Apple said the following.

Guidelines 2.3.7 - Performance - Accurate Metadata

We noticed that your app name includes the following trademarked term or popular app name: TMDB

App Store metadata should only include relevant content that accurately reflects the app's core experience. Leveraging trademarked terms or the popularity of other apps is not appropriate.

Next Steps

To resolve this issue, it would be appropriate to revise your app name and subtitle so they do not include trademarked terms or popular app names.

Resources

Learn more about requirements for app names and subtitles in App Store Review Guideline 2.3.7.

Guideline 4.1 - Design - Copycats

Your app's metadata contains content that is similar to third-party content, which may create a misleading association with another developer's app or intellectual property.

Specifically, your app's name and icons include references to TMDB.

Next Steps

It would be appropriate to revise your app and metadata to remove this third-party content before resubmitting for review.

If you have the necessary rights to distribute an app with this third-party content, attach documentary evidence in the App Review Information section in App Store Connect and reply to this message.

Note that providing falsified or fraudulent documentation, submitting apps designed to mislead or harm customers, or otherwise evading the review process may result in the termination of your Apple Developer Program account. Review the Terms & Conditions of the Apple Developer Program to learn more about our policies regarding termination.

Resources

Many factors may contribute to a guideline 4.1 rejection, including but not limited to the following examples:

- Using your app metadata or developer account information to create a misleading association with another app.
- Including irrelevant references to popular apps in an app's name or subtitle.
- Copying the content, features, and user interface of popular apps.

Learn more about App Store Review Guideline 4.1.

As per TMDB terms, TMDB attribution is required, and if the direct product is labeled with TMDB then we should inform TMDB about it. Is it okay, if I ship the app with the TMDB logo given for attribution as my app logo and use the name TMDB in my app name?

Hello again,

Practically, Apple is right.

TMDB is really so popular. And users might get confused while searching for the TMDB app. So, I decided to change my app name. I will resubmit both builds on Android and iOS.

I will write here again once Google and Apple take a decision on the app review.

Thanks

Hi @sandesh.vakale, thanks for checking in but yes, I'd say Apple did the right thing here. You should change the name of your app to something else. slight_smile

Hello again,

Apple refused my app again for the following reasons.

Just writing them here as it may help TMDB community.

Hello,

Thank you for your resubmission. Upon further review, we identified an additional issue that needs your attention. See below for more information.

If you have any questions, we are here to help. Reply to this message in App Store Connect and let us know.

Guideline 1.5 - Safety - Developer Information

The support URL specified in your app’s metadata, https://doc-hosting.flycricket.io/edb-entertainment-db/535afc8b-ebc4-4c57-83e0-1ba0ee7b6bf2/privacy, does not properly navigate to the intended destination.

Next Steps

To resolve this issue, please revise your app’s support URL to ensure it directs users to a webpage with support information.

Guideline 2.1 - Information Needed

We have started our review, but we need additional information to continue. Specifically, it appears your app may access or include paid digital content or services, and we want to understand your business model before completing our review.

Next Steps

Please review the following questions and provide as much detailed information about your business model as you can.

1. Who are the users that will use the paid subscriptions in the app?
2. Where can users purchase the subscriptions that can be accessed in the app?
3. What specific types of previously purchased subscriptions can a user access in the app?
4. What paid content, subscriptions, or features are unlocked within your app that do not use in-app purchase?
5. How do users obtain an account? Do users have to pay a fee to create an account?

Guideline 4.0 - Design

We noticed that the user is taken to the default web browser to sign in or register for an account, which provides a poor user experience.

Next Steps

To resolve this issue, please revise your app to enable users to sign in or register for an account in the app.

You may also choose to implement the Safari View Controller API to display web content within your app. The Safari View Controller allows the display of a URL and inspection of the certificate from an embedded browser in an app so that customers can verify the webpage URL and SSL certificate to confirm they are entering their sign in credentials into a legitimate page.

Resources

- For additional information on the Safari View Controller API, please review the What's New in Safari webpage.
- Note that apps that support account creation must also offer account deletion, per App Store Review Guideline 5.1.1(v). Learn more about offering account deletion in your app.

Guideline 5.1.1 - Legal - Privacy - Data Collection and Storage

We noticed you collect data to track after the user selects "Ask App Not to Track" on the App Tracking Transparency permission request.

Specifically, we noticed your app accesses web content you own and collects cookies for tracking after the user asked you not to track them.

Next Steps

To resolve this issue, please revise your app so that you do not collect data for tracking purposes if the user does not give permission for tracking.

Alternatively, if you do not collect cookies for tracking purposes, revise the cookie prompts that appear in your app to clarify you do not track users.

Resources

- Tracking is linking data collected from your app with third-party data for advertising purposes, or sharing the collected data with a data broker. Learn more about tracking.
- See Frequently Asked Questions about the requirements for apps that track users.

Guideline 5.1.1(v) - Data Collection and Storage

We noticed that your app supports account creation but does not appear to include an option to initiate account deletion.

Apps that support account creation must also offer account deletion to give App Store users more control of the data they've shared while using your app.

Next Steps

If your app already supports account deletion, reply to this message and let us know how to locate this feature. If your app does not support account deletion, revise your app to include an option to initiate account deletion and delete all user data you are not legally required to retain.

If you are unable to offer account deletion or need to provide additional customer service flows to facilitate and confirm account deletion, either because your app operates in a highly-regulated industry or for some other reason, reply to this message in App Store Connect and provide additional information or documentation. If you have questions regarding your legal obligations, check with your legal counsel.

Keep these requirements in mind when updating your app to support account deletion:

- Only offering to temporarily deactivate or disable an account is insufficient.
- If users need to visit a website to finish deleting their account, include a link directly to the page on your website where they can complete the process.
- You may include confirmation steps to prevent users from accidentally deleting their account. However, only apps in highly-regulated industries may require users to use customer service resources, such as making a phone call or sending an email, to complete account deletion.

Resources

- Review frequently asked questions and learn more about the account deletion requirements.
Please see attached screenshots for details.

I will keep posting here if I manage to upload an app to the apple store successfully.

Thanks

Hello,

Hush .......

I don't understand why Apple review is so strict. They rejected the app again saying design issues and Apple wants me to have account creation in the app. I did used Safari Web View controller (in app browser) but apple still rejected the app.

Here is the response.

Hello,

Thank you for your efforts to follow our guidelines. There are still some issues that need your attention.

I responded to them with an appeal but this will be my last try.

Thanks
