The Devil (1972/1988) release year?

Andrzej Żuławski's movie The Devil was made in 1972, but it was banned by the government and only became widely available in 1988. Wikipedia and IMDb say it had a limited release in 1972, but I'm having a hard time finding a source for this. TMDB lists the release year as 1988.
My personal preference would be to list it as a 1972 movie since that's when it was made, but what do others think, which year should be given as the release year?

The goal is to have data that is as accurate as possible in the release information section. TMDb currently doesn't keep track of the production year, and 1972 definetly shouldn't be entered as a fake release date just because it's the year the film was made.
That being said, we should ideally find out if there is any truth to a limited theatrical release, or any public screening, in 1972.
