当玲音的全息影像出现在云层中时，“真实的”玲音进入了网络寻找答案。她的探索指向了一位“儿童杀手”科学家，这位科学家的邪恶研究如今正被KNIGHTS所利用。

Young children are acting strangely, arms outstretched and silently staring at the sky. A shocking vision suddenly appears in the skies; it looks like Lain! Determined to get to the bottom of this, Lain's investigations finally bring her to the creator of KIDS -- but what she discovers is not what she hoped for.

Sur le chemin de l'école, Lain voit un enfant les mains tendues vers le ciel. Elle regarde dans la même direction mais ne voit rien d'anormal. Un peu plus tard dans l'après-midi, elle rencontre à nouveau deux enfants levant les mains au ciel. Elle lève les yeux au ciel une nouvelle fois... et soudain, les nuages s'écartent : Lain se retrouve à observer sa propre image dans le ciel. Intriguée par ce phénomène, elle poursuit sa quête d'informations.

ありすや樹里たちと街に遊びに出かけた玲音。ふと気がつくと、小学生の兄弟が空を仰いで手を広げている。青空に浮かぶ雲。その雲が動きだし、雲の合間からは、こちらを見下ろす人影らしきものが現れた。早速ワイヤードの中でその情報を集め始めた玲音は、一度抹消されたプロジェクト、キッズ・システムをつきとめる。
