Then Carmen and Bruno encounter racism while in their black makeup at a country & western bar, but then even more hostility when she is out of makeup at a park in a black neighborhood. Parents Brian and Renee are concerned about their son Nick's taste for the high life when he goes shopping with Rose,

Rose, in her black makeup, is surprised at how many references are made to race as she accompanies a black friend from poetry class, but she and her mom are even more surprised at the shoddy treatment they receive from their white neighbors. When black son Nick says he isn't offended when his classmates use the ""n"" word, his dad takes him to a black barbershop to become more familiar with his cultural heritage. White dad Bruno shows his anti-rap video to the families, which is so obnoxious it even offends his wife.

Rose has developed a crush on an accomplished black rapper in her poetry class. Tensions mount between the families, as the attitudes of white Carmen and Bruno continue to offend black Renee and Brian.
