Months after Damon and Enzo mysteriously vanished from the Armory vault, Stefan tirelessly pushes forward with their search, while Bonnie struggles holding onto hope that they will be found. Meanwhile, a dangerous encounter with an unexpected visitor leaves Caroline and Alaric fearing that someone – or something – may be targeting their family. Finally, after following some mysterious clues, Stefan realizes that whatever has a hold of his brother may have a more damaging grip over him than he could have ever imagined.

After learning that someone from Stefan’s past may be Damon and Enzo’s next target, Stefan, Bonnie and Caroline head to North Carolina. There, Bonnie takes drastic measures in an attempt to break Enzo free of whatever has a hold over him. At the Armory, Alaric and Georgie stumble upon a mysterious symbol that may be related to the supernatural force controlling Damon and Enzo. Finally, Caroline gets an unexpected surprise from Stefan.

Dopo aver liberato Stefan e aver rivelato cosi' la sua presenza a Mystic Fall, Cade impone a Damon una scelta: dovra' uccidere cento persone entro il tramonto, oppure Caroline.Intanto, Bonnie cerca di far provare ad Enzo tutto quello che ancora non ha sperimentato nella sua vita da vampiro, mentre sono in missione per andare a nascondere la campana dei Maxwell in un posto segreto...

Stefan, ormai umano, deve fare i conti con il suo passato sanguinario.Cade scioglie l'accordo con i fratelli Salvatore e propone a Damon un altro accordo: non prendera' la vita di Stefan, solo se Damon riuscira' a procurargli il diario di Ethan Maxwell, entro la mezzanotte dello stesso giorno. Matt, aiutato da Alaric, riesce a dare un senso ai suoi incubi. Bonnie, invece, non riesce a dire addio a Enzo.

Damon e Alaric si ritrovano faccia a faccia con una loro vecchia conoscenza. Stefan, invece, deve fare i conti con il proprio passato. Le sue vittime sopravvissute, ricordano e urlano vendetta. Caroline e Matt si alleano per impedire che le conseguenze dei crimini del passato da vampiro di Stefan lo mettano nei guai con la giustizia. Infine Cade focalizza la sua attenzione su Bonnie per riuscire a scovare l'anima di Enzo.
