另一个世界，住着一群与常见动植物截然不同的生物。远古以来，人们敬畏地称它们为“虫”。当虫的世界和人的世界重合时，虫师银古便会出现。介绍中提到的虫显然不是看上去肉呼呼扭动的小东西，而是一种最接近生命本源，类似灵体的生物。它们有自己的生存方式，而这种方式却可能有悖于人类的常识，甚至危害人类的生存。于是就出现了“虫师”这种职业，他们云游四方，对虫的生命形态，生存方式进行研究，并接受人 们的委托，解决可能是由虫引起的怪异事件。动画分两期播出，第1期于2014年4月至6月播出，第2期于2014年10月首播，两期作品共20话。

Mushishi: The Next Chapter continues the story of Mushishi Ginko on his journey to help the visible world to coexist with the Mushi.

During his travels, Ginko discovers various gifted individuals—those cursed by circumstance and those maintaining a fragile symbiosis with the Mushi—inevitably confronting the question of whether humanity, talented and tortured alike, can manage the responsibility of the unseen. Moreover, as a Mushishi, Ginko must learn more about these strange beings and decide if he has the right to interfere with the complex relationships between Mushi and mankind.

およそ遠しとされしもの――下等で奇怪、見慣れた動植物とはまるで違うとおぼしきモノ達。それら異形の一群を、ヒトは古くから畏れを含み、いつしか総じて“蟲”と呼んだ。時に蟲はヒトに妖しき現象をもたらし、そしてヒトは初めてその幽玄なる存在を知る。ヒトと蟲との世を繋ぐ者ーーそれが“蟲師”。すべての生命は、他を脅かすために在るのではない。みな、ただそれぞれが、在るように在るだけ――。

충사 애니메이션 2기로 제목은 「충사 속장」(蟲師 続章). 2014년 2분기에 1쿨, 10월부터 2쿨을 방영하는 분할 2쿨 방식으로 방영되었으며, 제작사는 1기와 같은 아트랜드이고 제작진도 대부분 1기와 같다. 그에 따라 2기 역시 고퀄리티로 제작 되었다. 2기는 원작 6권부터 마지막 10권까지의 내용인데 10권 마지막 에피소드인 방울 물방울은 극장판으로 따로 개봉하였다.

1기와는 달리 애니플러스에서 방영되었다.

2기 1화는 에피소드 순서에 변화를 줘서 광주에 대한 에피소드를 방영했다. 1기 1화도 술에 대한 에피소드였기 때문에 시리즈 구성에 통일감을 주기 위해서라고 한다.

3화는 익사관련을 소재로 사용한 탓인지 얼마 전 일어난 세월호의 여파로 애니플러스 측의 자체판단에 의해 TV판은 결방되었고 라이브 및 VOD로만 서비스되기로 결정됐다. 후에 재방송 시에는 결방되지 않고 그대로 방영됐다.

6화와 7화 사이에는 성우와 제작진이 모여서 1~6화를 요약하고 충사에 대해 이야기를 나누는 특별편(6.5화)이 방영되었다. 그런데 8화를 방영하고 나서 한번 더 6.5화를 재방송하고(...) 9화,10화 방영을 한 뒤 충어 제 2야(10.5화)를 끝으로 1쿨을 마무리했다. 11화와 12화로 편성되었던 「덤불길」은 8월 20일 밤 11시에 특별편 형식으로 방영되었다.

2기의 1권 초동 판매량은 4100장으로 집계되었다. 1기에 비하면 절반에도 못미친 판매량이지만 수많은 양산형과 모에물 사이에서도그럭저럭 선방은 했다. 사실 옴니버스식이라고는 해도 내용이 이어지는 8년만에 나온 후속작이라 판매량 감소는 자연스러운 것이었다. 오히려 8년만의 후속작, 그것도 원작이 완결난 이후 나온걸 감안하면 잘 팔린 편이라 할 수 있다.
