Mr. Wells ( Conrad Bain)

Maggie's boss at the Collinsport Inn. A definitely tolerable character not much more at all. It looked somehow as if they had plans for his character to be seen quite a lot as her boss. He probably willingly dropped early from the show ( was he ridiculed by people by he knew for being in a soap?) and they soon saw that sexy and talented actress Kathryn Leigh Scott was super fine as Maggie without seeing her boss. Bain dropped briefly back in as Wells in '68 then left permanently. No loss.

Sam Evans ( Mark Allen)

Maggie's painter father. The character would of course continue under David Ford for a long time. But the first Sam Evans seemed to be his own character. Tall and strong and very fine acting he was positively a superb early addition to the show. He was also a little more eccentric by scripting than the character was under Ford. More complex to think how he was a painter. We did not see him doing painter work like we did Ford either. A big loss when he disappeared.

Constable Jonas Carter ( Michael Currie)

Along with the first Sam Evans he also was a big loss for leaving the show early. A fine business-like attitude he had in his proceedings. Has a complex controlling relationship with the Collins family. You still believe he could be tough when he needed to be. He would have probably been positively brilliant to have been in the show even in the Barn eps. But Dana Elcar did a very good turn replacing him as Sheriff Patterson. If push came to shove, choice demanded and just one he ( Carter) would have been the slightly better of the two.

Matthew Morgan ( George Mitchell)

Craggy, almost psychotic sixtyish handyman at Collinwood. Highly defensive of Mrs. Stoddard. Suspicious and then some of beautiful Victoria Winters. This character like the two mentioned just before him was brilliantly played.Mitchell, a complete acting pro, made Matthew Morgan really seem to come from somewhere. He did this a little better than his replacement Thayer David ( making him come from somewhere). Mr. David in the part and made up to look older seemed like he was ready to go back to his dressing room. Mr. Mitchell leaving early was no loss. Not only did Matthew continue but Mitchell though very good had not created a character you really wanted to see continue. Three eps of the originally played character was just enough.

Mrs. Hopewell ( Elizabeth Wilson)

Employee back at the Foundling home Vicki was raised in. Symbolic last name -- Hopewell not Wilson! Efficient, good natured character. I got the feeling the actress may have been NYC raised. As far as potential as a further recurring character. Not enough. Just maybe one more appearance in other ep and that would have been it. As for the actress she could have been good probably had she played the nurse at Windcliff Sanitarium (when Maggie was there after she escaped from the house prison Barn had locked her in!).
