Discuss Battlestar Galactica

Any fans of the original ‘78 series & the 2004 remake notice the stark differences between Lorne Greene’s Adama & Edward James Olmos’s Adama? They’re both amazing actors who gave commanding performances, but their portrayals are polar opposites.

Lorne’s Adama is a very wise, grandfatherly character. Or maybe he’s like an old war veteran who’s seen a lifetime of battle so he’s more inclined to avoid conflict at all costs. He seems to genuinely care for all the ships in the fleet under his watch, even though it’s a huge mess.

EJO’s Adama has a cold, military approach. He’s more like a career soldier who knows only battle tactics, and he struggles with the humanity of leadership. To him, the straggling ships are a weakness, an unprotected flank. He cares for the fleet too, but there’s almost a feeling of resentment, like he’d rather be zipping across the cosmos frying cylons instead of herding sheep.

I think the 2 portrayals are each really fascinating. Can’t say which I prefer on a dramatic level (leaning toward EJO just because he’s so intense), but truth be told if I were on some floating space barge hoping to make it to a new world, I’d want Lorne in charge.

That and Lorne had that super cool dictaphone that actually turned his voice into words on a screen. High tech, man 🤯
