could not. I loathe him. I don't know why, I just do. I wanted to at least give him a go, a chance, but couldn't bring myself to watch even the Christmas special with him.

Which episodes have you actually watched with him in?

I only started watching him this season, since Netflix dropped the series. I got near the end of Smith’s run before it left Netflix. So only speaking of the first two episodes, I think he is good. I find him funny in his own way. He’s talented.

I certainly don't dislike Peter Capaldi, but I can't say that his incarnation has been everything that I had hoped for. At the end of DEEP BREATH, when he gave the camera that enigmatic look after we saw the clockwork man impaled on the spire, things looked very promising. However, since then, things have just sort of dissipated and fizzled.
Clara stayed at least one year too long for my liking and then when she finally did leave, her big death scene was reversed and Peter Capaldi spent an entire episode or two making Colin Baker's performance in THE TWIN DILEMMA look sane and stable. Mind you, his personality seems to change from one series to the next in any case.
And then there are his actual serials. It's difficult for me to embrace any Doctor that has had stories like ROBOT OF SHERWOOD, TIME HEIST, THE CARETAKER, KILL THE MOON, IN THE FOREST OF THE NIGHT, DARK WATER / DEATH IN HEAVEN, LAST CHRISTMAS, FACE THE RAVEN / HEAVEN SENT / HELL BENT and THE HUSBANDS OF RIVER SONG.
So far, the low point of his reign is still the Cyber-Brig and the high point was the classic console room from 1963. However, I tend to think that most of what is bad about Peter Capaldi's era is down to Steven Muppet. He's the show-runner, so the buck stops with him.

With the exception of about the last 15 minutes, I thought it was as dull as dishwater. I simply do not know why it was made as an extra long episode. It could have been a normal length episode and still told the same story.
I think it is overlong, overblown and overrated.

I suppose everyone has different tastes. I've only seen it once so need to rewatch it but thought it was a great episode that showcased Capaldi really well. It had the timey wimey stuff Moffat likes to do but it just felt right for once - It felt a bit simpler as I find Moffat sometimes tries too hard and ends up making a complicated mess. I wasn't keen on the finale though.
To me the issue is the show doesn't seem to know what to do. Capaldi is obviously an older more serious darker doctor so they have tried to add other elements at times to counteract this and appeal to the younger audience and it just doesn't always gel.

I agree about the misfires in their attempts to change the twelfth Doctor's persona.
Sonic sunglasses... Electric guitar... T-shirt and windcheater...
Please make it stop.

Yeah. Don't know what's with all the gimmicks. I didn't mind the whole boetie part of smith's doctor. It worked without being too over the top but sonic glasses on an old darker doctor who also plays the guitar on top of a tank. What are they thinking? I don't even mind silvester's spoon playing but this is just wrong.

He's a fine actor I suppose but to me, he sucked the life out of The Doctor. He's NO fun, no sense of humor, unfriendly. He's cold and too aloof. Too much self guilt/loathing (The Doctor saved an incalculable number of lives and needs to cut himself some slack!!).
Also, with the previous regenerations, there were core personality traits/characteristics/memories, etc. that carried over. Capaldi's Doctor really has none of it. H'e like a brand new, totally different Doctor.
I like "dark" but he's really not likable at all.

I found him the oppisite. He has colin bakers dark side and maybe even Hartnells serious side but also the action man side of Pertwee with tom bakers manic side. He is more of a classic doctor type though than new who. I also found he became more warmer after series 8. His relationship with clara grew in series 9 and the chemistry is great between bill and him in 10. I was glad they didn't go for the over the top type as we'd had that with 11 and even 10

Fair point. I've only seen NuWho so my yardstick is a bit skewed. I do want to see the old ones :)
