Interesting article. I think it's one of his villainous personalities:

I guess it all really depends on how closely they plan to stick to the X-Men and comic universes. As of now it seems like they prefer deviating so as to be able to write their own story without feeling tied down to a whole cannon, but still early days so we'll see. I am in no way a comic expert, I never even heard of David Haller before this show, honestly, so not my area. But whether it's an existing creation or not, TDYWE is certainly one of the biggest mysteries on the show that I'm itching to understand. He definitely seems to be a personality of David's, in my opinion. Maybe possessing the darkest, most villainous part of him or something like that?
Maybe what he might or could become. His worst capabilities scratching to get in and create chaos. I don't know, something like that. Or maybe they'll subvert that and actually make him a "good" guy just to screw with us, haha, that'd be a reach as it looks right now though. Anyways, good article.
Thanks for keeping some posting going around here. The quicker we can get back to having some semblance of a message board, the better!

"Maybe what he might or could become. His worst capabilities scratching to get in and create chaos."
Yep, that's what I think too.

I always go back to, with the little actual content we have that is haha, the moment TDWYE was first uttered. That quick cut between scenes of David, in his stripped shirt outfit, eating tape (the tapes he possibly stole form Dr. Poole?) with the text and voice over saying, "The Demon with the Yellow Eyes." For some reason that read to me like he was possessed, in a sense, by that demon in that moment and they're giving us an almost subliminal display of what he's like when that happens or again...what he may be like, a glimpse of him coming out and how we'll keep seeing that happen, and probably just get worse.

Here's an interesting analysis of episode 2 (it also mentions TDWYE):

Every time something very stressful or frightening he shows up- in Chapter 4 did anyone notice that Lenny had the yellow eyed dude's fingers?
I think he's another personality that is there to shield David from pain.
Oliver Bird referred to it as a parasite.

Which could also infer to an external force trying to manipulate David.

I have watched some vids and read comments/analysis from a variety of websites, many of which makes a lot of sense. There does not appear to be a general consensus of who or what the devil is and I wonder if the devil is being over thought. Perhaps it is something more prosaic. It seems to be connected to something terrifying in David's early life. Something he may have discussed with his therapist, which could explain his ingesting (destroying) the tapes of his session. We saw a shadow father reading a nightmarish bedtime story, and David would not tell anyone what the stars said - only that his dad took him out to look at the stars. Perhaps something traumatic occurred while they were out.
Or not...

I want him to be Mojo. Mojo and his TV universe are close to Xmen in the lore dept. even though it was a stand-alone limited series. Longshot ended up being a member of the Xmen so there is a connection.
Mojo had yellow eyes, was fat, and we have yet to see TDWYE's lower body so there is the chance that he has the spider-y leg array.
Didn't really like MArvel connecting that limited series to the 616 universe but I will say that it was a great series. Would have made a great HBO mini series.

So much for that theory.
Still thoroughly enjoying this show.

My guess is the fat devil and David are something like Baron Harkonnen and Alia in Dune. A powerful personality/memories that became attached (or a copy were picked up) by David's telepathic mind, a powerful and confident and ruthless personality/entity that David allows to take over to handle stressful situations and make things right, and has been fighting for supremacy as the dominant personality in David's mind.
I don't think it's an actual demon or entity of its own, just a copy David snagged along with many others, and one that - like the Baron is Alia's mind - has been keeping the others silenced in exchange for a little ascendancy.

The latest episode confirmed it's a separate entity.
