描述未來美國社會遭遇嚴重汙染，部分地區組成父權主宰的基列共和國，「使女」是所有女人被共同稱呼的名字，她們是基列共和國的領導者的所屬物，不容許有私人隱密的慾望，她們全部專為社會領導者服務與生育，沒有私人財產、不能閱讀，也不許允有任何的個人思考。
