在海边的教堂里，一对新人宣誓结为夫妻。新娘是自由撰稿人植村君子（仲间由纪惠饰），新郎是报社编辑山本矶次郎（谷原章介饰）。只有两个人参加的仪式虽然简单，但却让君子十分陶醉。喜欢自由的君子对繁琐的结婚仪式毫无耐心，然而这时矶次郎却告诉君子，下个星期要回乡下老家举办婚宴，这是自己的母亲、君子婆婆（松坂庆子饰）的命令。

作为媳妇，君子谦卑地向婆婆行礼问候，没想到婆婆对自己说的第一句话竟然是“希望你不是为了贪图我们家的家产才和我儿子结婚的”。这让君子非常气愤，要强的她决心要向严厉的婆婆证明，自己也不是等闲之辈。婆婆带着君子到各处亲戚家问候行礼，君子心底里对这一切繁文缛节深恶痛绝，但还得满脸堆笑，装做很开心的样子。这样勉强自己无非是不想让婆婆给看扁了。

终于快到婚宴当天了，婆婆提议让君子为大家表演传统的日本舞蹈，这可难坏了君子。忍耐终于达到极限的君子穿着新娘的礼物从山本家偷跑出来，一路向车站奔去，新郎矶次郎在后面狂追。君子坦率地跟矶次郎表明，自己就是一个不懂得拒绝、不会说“不”的人，在婆婆家的生活已经让她无法再忍受下去了，要不离婚吧。听了君子的话，矶次郎含泪表示，为了让君子和母亲和睦相处，自己一定会尽全力，因为他想和君子一起生活。面对丈夫的恳求，君子与矶次郎约法三章，表示今后山本家的一切家庭活动自己都不参加，矶次郎无奈答应了妻子，破涕为笑的君子和丈夫一起回到了婆家。

然而，令君子没有料到的是，太平日子并未来临，更大的考验还在等着她

Makimura Kimiko, freelance journalist and city-girl extraordinaire, marries into a traditional Japanese family. Most overbearing of the Yamamoto Family members is Isojiro's mother, Shimako, who seems to think Kimiko is the perfect wife whose knowledge of the traditional Japanese arts knows no bounds. Kimiko on the other hand is sloppy, a bad cook unless it happens to be microwavable, and couldn't tell a shamisen from a bagpipe if her life depended on it. Bombarded by customs, Kimiko's only desire is to never step foot in the Main House again. But with the interference of her husband, Isojiro, who can't seem to say no to his mother, Kimiko finds herself back in a place she calls Hell and smack in the midst of some crazy tradition her in-laws want her to participate in.

Makimura Kimiko, journaliste indépendante et citadine extraordinaire, se marie à Isojiro dans une famille japonaise traditionnelle. La mère du fiancé, Shimako, semble penser que Kimiko est l'épouse parfaite car sa connaissance des arts traditionnels japonais ne connaîtrait pas de limites. C'est tout l'inverse car Isojiro n'a jamais pu dire non à sa mère et à brossé un portrait de sa fiancée qui est son opposé.
