本剧原作为2012年开始连载的漫画《SMOKING GUN 民间科搜研调查员 流田缘》，我们的身边有很多无法依靠法律和警察解决的案件，这部作品就是以解决这些案件的民间科学搜查研究所为舞台的科学悬疑推理剧。

甜甜圈片刻不离手的天才鉴定师流田缘（香取慎吾 饰）利用DNA鉴定、画像分析、笔迹鉴定、指纹对比等科学技术，解决骗保案件、证明咸猪手嫌疑人的清白、寻找跟踪狂，挑战一件又一件难案，找到一个又一个SMOKING GUN（决定性证据）。

Private forensic researcher Nagareda Enishi (Katori Shingo) is usually very sluggish as well as sloppy, and always aloof. However, his entire demeanour changes once he is at a scene and his skills as a forensic researcher are topnotch. He stands up for the disadvantaged by using science and technology to uncover conclusive evidence and solve trivial civil cases which the police will not handle such as adultery, molest and stalking. Enishi used to be a member of the Research Institute of Forensic Science and was called an ace, but he now belongs to Chiyoda Forensic Science Institute due to some incident.

Enishi Nagareta travaille dans un laboratoire d'investigation privé. Il essaie de résoudre de petites affaires que la police a peut-être négligées car ce ne sont pas des cas majeurs, mais ils sont importants pour ceux qui sont directement concernés. Au dela des outils de la police scientifique, son outil préféré est un beignet sucré. Sur les lieux de l'incident, Enishi trouve des indices en regardant par le trou du beignet.
