So we met Anna in the 80's on GH. Alex arrived on All My Children many years later. When she first arrived it was unclear if she was really Anna or if Alex was indeed a different character. It also was not immediately revealed that she was Anna's twin.
If you go back to the time of Alex on AMC her character was quite similar to Anna. She was a heroine and at no point was she ever bad or crazy.
Now we're supposed to believe that Alex was always duplicitous and devious? Not thrilled that GH has retconned a great AMC character for this ridiculous plot. I love Finola and I'm glad for any screen time/ storyline she gets but this character assassination is asinine.

Totally agree. Alex was the stable twin.

Anna and Alex had also met AND go along well, but we're now supposed to believe that they had always had an antagonistic relationship and that Alex would kidnap Anna, hold her prisoner for months and impersonate Anna in Port Charles for no reason whatever? Weren't these writers the very people who created Alex DeVane/Merrick in the first place? How can they not know the history of their own character?

The character of Alex was created on AMC while Anna was away from Port Charles. It was a creative way to introduce the character on AMC as they let the audience wonder for a very long time (in soap time) if she was Anna, a twin or just someone who looked a lot like Anna. On AMC Alex was always a "good guy"

And Finola Hughes knows this, so I wonder if she isn't bitching about it to the writers behind the scenes, I would, not out of any sense of outrage, as out of an annoyance of an unnecessary retcon.

Actors rarely care as long as they are paid and she likely does not recall details 20 years on.
And it's Marick, as she was married to Dmitri Marick- a Hungarian count played by Michael Nader.

That's not true at all, there are legions of examples of actors who complained about a plot, a line or a scene and lobbied, successfully or unsuccessfully, to have it changed

True, on the podcast she subtly expressed wanting to return to GH sooner than she ended up doing, saying she was told 'the canvas was full'. As in, she wanted to return to work, not, she cared about the plot points of Anna/Alex. If anything she probably was happy to get work on AMC when GH supposedly 'had no room for her on the canvas'
Very true, on Bradford Anderson's podcast Finola couldn't remember details of why she was shooting in Monterey (it was for when Anna and Jake followed Kevin and Terry)

And a 100x more that are grateful for the work and suck it up. Listen to some of my actor interviews and the reticence abut giving crit of actors or writers or directors is huge,

Actors are workers. Ask 100 workers if they recall what they were doing at work on a day in 93 or 02 or 87. Because we can see old YT clips does nor mean that shoot was memorable for the actor.
