One of the inseparable problems of cities is the attraction of migrants from various fields. The river, which has been a part of the city’s long history, brings with it all the polemics related to the city’s development.

Joty ter Kulve grew up in the house where the historic Linggajati agreement was concluded in 1946. She experienced the Second World War in Indonesia, was imprisoned in camps and left for the Netherlands after the war. Now she returns, perhaps for the last time, to the place where she grew up. The young documentary maker Twan Spierts accompanied Joty to that historic place, where the first step was taken towards the independence of the Dutch East Indies. The documentary was previously broadcast on Omroep West.

Sunny Side of the Street follows a young truck driver who is looking for his wife amidst the riots and commotion in 1998, Jakarta. During his search, he meets a Chinese Indonesian woman who’s hiding from the masses. They end up sharing a journey through the night, in hopes of getting back to their families. After a tense encounter with a group of rioters, the driver fears his wife’s safety is not guaranteed and doubts his decision to help the woman.

This documentary presents the scientific facts behind the issue of peat haze as well as points of view and opinions from local and regional stakeholders. The burning of the peat forests throughout tropical Southeast Asia creates pollution, and this posed significant challenges to human health and the economies of the region during the second decade of the 21st century. The problem of peat haze pollution has been somewhat mitigated in recent years but in spite of this positive progress a few of the critical issues are yet to be solved. A complete solution to this complex issue will not be a simple one.
